4 Great Guides to Understanding the Webiverse
September 5, 2009The web is a huge and mystifying universe, filled with vast networks of anonymous aliens who will insist on calling you “friend.”
Whether you’re a new immigrant or just a clueless citizen, you’ll definitely need a few guides to help you find your way around. Here are a few to get you started.
1. Understanding Usernames
If you’re going to live in the Webiverse, you’re going to need a ‘net name - a “handle” everyone can use to find and identify you. Before you pick one, be sure to check this Username Translator from Cracked.com first.
Fun with Filing: 10 Cool Tools to Make the Task Less Tedious
September 4, 2009Of the body of tasks that make up any desk job, filing and sorting paperwork must be the smelly armpit. I’m convinced that half the companies that go green don’t really care about saving trees — they just want to put an end to piles of paper files.
If you don’t have a slave… er… assistant to put away your pesky papers, here are some terrific tools to help make filing a little more fun.
1. Fabby File Folders
Add some color to your workday - and your filing cabinet - with these fabulously funny file folders from Knock Knock.

September 3, 2009Here’s a cool thing to do when you have some time for introspection (or actually, even when you’re just bored): Write an email to your future self at FutureMe.org.
Here’s the story behind the site (in the words of the creators):
Two fellas started this here site so that you could write yourself a letter to be delivered at a later date. We’ve all had to do them in high school and college. It’s sorta cool to receive a letter from yourself about where you thought you’d be a year (two years? more?) later. FutureMe.org is based on the principle that memories are less accurate than emails. We strive for accuracy.
Many thanks to my friend @radiojen for the tweet that led me to it!

3 Things You Can Do Now to Avoid Going Crazy (and Broke) This Christmas

I mean, really — would a GUY ever bother to keep track of (or even KNOW) who was naughty or nice? Take the time to read a gazillion handwritten letters from kids? Painstakingly procure the perfect gift for every person? I don’t think so.
Christmas is a woman’s job.
And for women who already HAVE demanding jobs, it’s an extra workload - with unbelievable overtime shifts - that can drive a girl straight into the gates of Crazyland.
So as the “ber” months roll in, you’d be doing yourself a really big favor by prepping ahead and breaking the beastly Christmas burden into bite-sized, manageable tasks. Here are some things you can do as early as now:
6 Laptops for Ladies That HP Should Just Friggin’ Manufacture Already
August 31, 2009Earlier this year, I saw some downright droolworthy designs for women’s laptops created by Russian designer Nikita Buyanov.
Well it turns out our little Nikita is a jokester, and these laptops do not, and likely never will, exist.
I’m crushed. And my husband is ecstatic.
Well anyway, a woman can dream, right? So here they are, in all their never-to-be realized glory:
Perfect for: Savvy women who don’t lug around oversize 10-pound bags.
Features: Hard OLED technology with touch sensors, and some sort of flexible material that allows you to roll it up and tuck it into your bag (awesome!)
Perfect for: Pathologically vain women
Features: A big button that changes the laptop’s screen into a mirror, a pop-out makeup palette and on-the spot fingernail printing

I love flowcharts, and this little gem from the geniuses at Shoebox is one of my all-time favorites.
3 Types of Women Even Women Should Avoid
August 30, 2009I recently read an article for men called 10 Types of Women You Need to Avoid, and it got me thinking…
I’m normally a “Live & Let Live” advocate who believes everyone deserves a chance, but even I have to admit there are a few exceptions.
Whether you’re male or female, if you want a happy and peaceful life, there are some women you just need to avoid, period. As I mentioned in a previous post, life’s too short.
1. The Dementra: The Female Dementor
“Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them… Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself…soul-less and evil. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life.“ - Remus Lupin, Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban
Ok, so after Remus Lupin’s description, I think it’s pretty clear that the Dementra definitely belongs at the top of the list of Women to Avoid (or run away from - screaming in terror - as the case may be).
The moaning, groaning, FML-repeating Dementra sucks the joy out of every room she enters, bringing an ominous cloud of gloom to even the brightest of days.
Why You Should Avoid Her: The Dementra refuses to be happy, no matter what you say or do - and she’ll never allow you to be happy in her presence. Nothing - not even chocolate - can save you from the pit of despair she’ll try to drag you into. Ditch the bitch.
7 Awesome "7 Habits" Lists
If Stephen Covey charged a dollar for every “7 Habits” copycat list that cropped up after 7 Habits of Highly Effective People became a hit, I’m sure he’d make even more money from that than he ever did with the book.
It seems there’s a “7 Habits” list for almost anything you can think of (do a Google search, you’ll see) but here are my Top 7 picks:
- The 7 Habits of Highly Happy People (Marc and Angel Hack Life)
- 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective People (The Positivity Blog)
- 7 Little Habits That Can Change Your Life (Zen Habits)
- 7 Habits of Highly Innovative People (Think Simple Now)
- 7 Habits of Losers - Are Your Buddies Keeping You Back? (Dumb Little Man)
- The 7 Highly Effective Habits of Successful Freelancers (DesignersMind)
- 7 Habits of Highly Efficient Bloggers (Daily Blog Tips)
Life’s Too Short to Be Anything But Happy.
August 29, 2009I have a confession to make. This is stolen property.
I can’t for the life of me remember who I reblogged it from on Tumblr, but I’m hoping the original creator will forgive me, and keep in mind the valuable lessons which attracted me to it in the first place…
- Let go of pointless drama.
- Focus on the good.
- Life’s too short to be anything but happy.
3 Reasons You Should Bookmark This Blog
“Oh yawn, another blog.”
I can hear you thinking it. (I can!)
And yes, it’s true… there’s definitely no dearth of blogs in the webiverse, and if you’re going to stick around and keep reading this one, then there’d better be a good reason.
Well… I have THREE.
And here they are:
1. The Desktop Diva will make you SMARTER.
Let’s get something straight right from the get-go. I like to think I’m a pretty smart gal… but I’m no Yoda. (To begin with, I have much better hair.)
A fountain of wisdom, I am not. What I AM, however, is someone who’s lived long enough to figure out some of life’s little secrets — which I’m always happy to share with those willing to listen (and quite often, those who aren’t).
One the best secrets I’ve learned is this: You don’t actually have to BE an expert at something to write about it. You just need to know who the experts are - and quote THEM. (Heehee! See? You’re a little smarter already.)
So while you might occasionally benefit from some of my own tasty little tidbits, you’ll probably learn more from the limitless nuggets of wisdom and practical life lessons I find in the many excellent blogs, sites, books.. and yes, people too - that I’m lucky enough to be exposed to every day.
So here’s the promise — whenever I learn something that might make me (and you) a little more savvy and fabby than usual, you’ll find it here.
