Geek Chic: 10 Awesome Accessories for the Fashion-Forward Geekess

November 29, 2009

In case you haven’t heard yet, Geekiness is the new black. And there’s no rule that says we have to sacrifice style to succumb to (or even set!) the trend. Here are ten awesome geek girl accessories that are both fashionable AND functional…

1. ORB Bluetooth Headset

The O.R.B (Orbital Ring Bluetooth) from Hybra Advance Technologies is an innovative Bluetooth headset that transforms into a ring with a simple twist.

The headset can be used up to 30 feet away from your phone and comes in four sizes, from small to extra-large. A scrolling display on the outside surface of the ring displays caller ID information as well as voice-to-text so you don’t even have to take it off of your finger to stay in touch. When you receive a call or set an alarm for a scheduled meeting, the ring vibrates on your finger to alert you.

2. Power Purse

Charge your electronic gadgets on the move, using only your handbag. The Power Purse, designed by mechanical engineering student Joe Hynek, uses solar panels to absorb the sun’s rays and turn them directly into electricity.

Just plug in your mobile phone, camera or iPod  —  and pray for sunny skies.

3. Momenta PC Necklace

The Momenta PC, an entry in Microsoft’s Next-Gen PC Design Competition, monitors the world around you to help you determine what sorts of events cause emotional or mental change.

Momenta records everything in a rolling buffer and continues to record until you tell it to stop.  When your heart rate speeds up, it tracks back to five minutes prior to give you a re-run of the events to help you distinguish what caused the emotional change — allowing you to save and remember your life’s most exciting moments.

4. Lisco USB Snake

We’re always in need of a USB cable to charge up a phone, an i-pod or load up digital photos from our camera, but carrying around a USB cable can be kind of a hassle. The Lisco USB Snake by Laurent Hongisto, which resembles the stylish slap bracelet of the 90s, puts the fun in functional — plus it’s easy to find.

5. iRing

Victor Soto’s iRing is still just a concept, but if and when it does come out, it should be a pretty cool way to wirelessly control the playback functionality of your iPod/iPhone.

6. USB Engagement Ring

Let’s be honest. No one wants a Swarovski USB flash drive ring as an actual engagement ring. It would, however make a pretty and perfectly useful bauble for some gorgeous geekess.

7. Nintendo Purse a.k.a. The GeekBag

This Nintendo Purse was actually a DIY project, so unless you find the girl who created it, all you can do is admire its sheer geekery. If you’d like something similar, try the BagTV I featured in a previous post.

8. Binary Encoder Rings

These Encoder Rings designed by Jonathan Ben-Tovim are decorated with holes that represent a 64-character code rendered in binary. This is your big chance to wear sensitive data on your finger, since only geeks with 20/20 vision would ever have a chance of figuring out what they say.

9. USB Mini Handbag

Russian designer Dima Komissarov has created these teeny handbag-shaped USB sticks that can store all your pictures and documents. The bag inflates with the amount of data you add to it, so you know when it’s getting a little too full.

10. HTTPanties

Personally I think panties are more of a necessity than an accessory… but try telling that to Britney Spears.

Bread & Circuses all around. But 2010 is coming.

Credit capacity has already been reached and breached worldwide and falling incomes cannot cover the ballooning interest payments. No worries. We are going to outfit ourselves with fancy gadgets for the final race to the bottom!

Watch out for the unwinding USD/Yen carry trade. I’d like a purse to carry all my worthless USB-compatible Treasury bills.
