Site to See: HeardonTV.com

October 12, 2009

I don’t really listen to the radio, so any music discoveries I make are mostly from tracks I hear on TV.

HeardonTV.com is a user-generated website featuring all the music played on TV shows. Looking for a song you just heard on a show? This is the place to go. And if you actually know the title of a song you just heard, help other fans out and contribute!

The 10 Most Irritating Expressions in the English Language

October 10, 2009

About this time last year, researchers at Oxford University released a list of the ten most irritating words and phrases in the English language — six of which I use rather frequently. Oops.

To come up with the list, the researchers used an incredibly massive language database called the Oxford University Corpus, which monitors millions of books, papers, magazines, broadcasts, the internet, and other sources. The database alerts them to new words and phrases, and can tell them which expressions are disappearing, or are so overused that they’ve become irritating to hear or read.

Anyway, here they are… the 10 most irritating expressions in the English language as of November 2008:

1. At the end of the day

2. Fairly unique

3. I personally

4. At this moment in time

5. With all due respect

6. Absolutely

7. It’s a nightmare

8. Shouldn’t of

9. 24/7

10. It’s not rocket science

I imagine they’ll be coming up with a new list for 2009, and I’m really curious as to what words and phrases will appear. (I’m hoping “Attached herewith” is there — I really hate that.)

Any guesses or suggestions? Share your pet peeves in the comments section!

10 Awww-Inspiring Scenes with Ten of the Most Awesome Couples on TV

October 8, 2009

Everyone who knows me knows I’m a hopeless TV junkie, and for the most part it’s because I get so heavily invested in the shows’ characters and their relationships — particularly when the relationships are romantic. Here are a few scenes from some of  my favorite shows, featuring the couples that make my TV-watching so worthwhile.

1. Chuck and Sarah Share a Cheeseburger

Hard-core Charah ’shippers might wonder why I chose this scene out of all the squeal-worthy scenes of Chuck Season 2, but I really do love it — particularly the part where Chuck and Sarah smile so brilliantly at each other towards the end. Awww…

2. Bones and Booth Dine & Dash

If you’d rather see the famous scene when Bones‘ Booth & Brennan kiss for the first time, you can go watch it on YouTube, but this “Dine and Dash” scene really kills me. It shows exactly how nerdy Bones is, and what a cool guy Booth is, and why together, they make such a cute couple. Awww…

5 Men’s Sites Even Women Will Enjoy

October 7, 2009

Ok, maybe I should expand that title to say “5 men’s sites women will enjoy in spite of the semi-nude photos and sexist jokes.”

I used to laugh when my male friends would say they read Playboy “because of the articles.” (Yeah, right… pervazoid) But the truth is, many men’s magazines really do have fabulous, well-written and extremely funny content.

I already mentioned HolyTaco as an example in a previous post. Here are five more men’s sites I think you might enjoy:

1. AskMen

AskMen.com draws in over 7 million readers a month, and with good reason. It’s a comprehensive portal for all things male, with well-written content covering a wide range of topics.

What I like: Their Top 10 lists, movie and gadget reviews, and the fine living section. Also, the pics of the bikini-clad babes are discreetly placed so as not to distract.

What I don’t like: The big ads you sometimes have to endure before you actually get to what you want to read

10 Ways to Improve Your Memory

October 6, 2009

Forgetfulness. It’s one of the most telling signs of age.  I used to boast that “My brain is my organizer.”  Now, just a few years later, I find myself surreptitiously checking my phone every 15 minutes just to see what I have to do next.

Age alone doesn’t determine how well you remember. Memory is closely related to your health, habits, motivation levels, and organizational skills. So whether you’re 25 or 75, there are many things you can (and should) do to keep your memory sharp and functional:

1.  Challenge your brain.

Learn new skills. Use your memory to the utmost. Mental challenges help rewire connections in the brain. Do crosswords and other puzzles, or learn to play chess. If you’re right-handed, use your left hand. Study a new language. The more you stimulate your brain, the more resistant it becomes to degeneration and disease.

5 Funny Baby Videos Guaranteed to Cheer You Up in 5 Minutes or Less

October 4, 2009

Babies are amazing cheerer-uppers, so here’s a quick pick-me-up for whenever you’re feeling down. I’m willing to bet you’ll be laughing by the second video, but I added 3 more just in case. :)

1.  Baby Billie Jean

A much better remake of Evian’s famous Roller Babies ad, with a couple of extra clips added in. (The moonwalking baby is a definite must see)

2.  Laughing Baby

This kid has the most contagious laughter in the world, so this vid just never gets old. I think I’ve seen it about a hundred times, and I still laugh whenever I watch it again.

Bring on the Bling: 10 Crazy Expensive Office Items and Accessories

October 3, 2009

I’ve always been of the opinion that life’s greatest luxuries aren’t things… but sometimes it’s fun to take a peek at how outrageously silly the ultra-rich can be. Here are ten of the most ridiculously expensive things you could buy for your office if you had more money and less sense:

1. Luvaglio Laptop - US$1 Million
UK-based luxury goods creator Luvaglio recently created the first million-dollar laptop — details of which have not yet been released. What makes up the bulk of the hefty price tag however is a removable, very rare coloured diamond that acts as the power button when placed into the laptop.

Good Grief: 7 R’s to Help Heal Heartbreak

October 2, 2009

With all the tragedy plaguing the Philippines and other parts of Asia in the past week, I thought I’d re-post an article about grief that I wrote a few years back.

Grief is the normal response of sorrow, emotion, and confusion that comes from losing someone or something important to you. It’s a typical reaction to death, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job or good health, or a permanent move away from family and friends.

We’ve all lived long enough to know that we can’t avoid grief — but there are ways to deal with grief and avoid (or at least minimize) the destruction it can cause.

1. Release.

Don’t keep your feelings bottled up.  Many grief counselors say that the most effective method to deal with grief is to allow enough time for mourning. Each person grieves in his or her own way, and must take the time necessary to recover from a loss.

The grieving process may include many emotions, including periods of anger, depression and numbness. Go through them. Cry your eyes out. Punch walls. Wail. Write letters, or a journal. Do whatever it takes. Then, when you’re done, take a deep breath and resolve to move on.

Where I’m From, Everyone’s a Hero

I wish you all could see the amazing community spirit, charity and compassion in the Philippines. What I see happening here totally blows away the response to hurricane Katrina…. People here have less to give, yet they are giving ABUNDANTLY. There is such a greater story than just the ‘death toll’ that the lame media fails to capture.

October 1, 2009

Uh oh. It’s Octoberrrr… and I’m willing to bet that a lot of you still haven’t followed my Christmas preparation advice. Sigh.

Well, I refuse to give up on you, so here I am again with a new set of gift suggestions — this time for your coffee-loving co-workers and friends.

1. The 2-Carat Cup

Give your girlfriends a great way to start the day — a graceful porcelain mug adorned with a sparkling “diamond” ring. The 2 Carat Cup is packed in an elegant over-size jewelry box, so when you present it as a gift, all they see is the ring!
