Va Va Vrooom: 10 Very Cool Vehicles (That Aren’t Cars)

October 28, 2009

I mentioned before that I actually like a lot of websites for men, and they invariably have extensive features on hot cars, cool wheels, and sexy rides.

Well, I’ve always thought that a women’s edition of the sweet ride lineup would be interesting, since we do tend to look for other qualities in the vehicles we choose. (Is it cute? Check. Do I look cute in it? Check.  SOLD!!!)

Cars already get a lot of attention, so here are ten very cool non-cars that I’m sure most women would love.

1. The Carbon Chassis Velocipede

The Carbon Chassis Velocipede is the first human powered vehicle (HPV) to have a carbon fiber monocoque chassis — the same material found in the fastest high-performance Formula 1 automobiles. Designed by world-renowned designer Michael Goretzky, this customized vehicle combines the low-impact exercise benefits of a recumbent bicycle with the stability of a three-wheeled cruiser and the aerodynamics of a concept automobile. Now that, my friends, is a sexy ride.

2. The Motorized Monocycle

Drawing upon a robust history of development that began with an original design conceived in Marseilles in 1869, this super-frakking-cool motorized monocycle can propel a single rider up to 25 MPH and run for up to two hours on less than a 1/2-gallon of gasoline. You steer it by leaning to one side or the other, and though it isn’t a street-legal vehicle,  it runs safely on any dense surface such as pavement or grass.

3. The Yike Bike

The foldable Yike Bike is like a unicycle with a training wheel, powered by an electric motor. The 21-pound device has the handlebars located to either side of the seat, presumably to cut down on its profile, and has a range of 10 kilometers. The most awesome thing about it, though, is that it’s portable and can fold up into a miniscule little pack.

4. The i2 Cargo Segway

As far as I’m concerned, any Segway is a cool vehicle but I like the i2 Cargo because it’s sleek, sexy and storage-friendly.  Costing far less to maintain than an automobile and capable of hauling up to 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) of payload, the i2 Cargo ensures you can go about your business with only the gear you need and nothing more.

5. The Fred Perry X Vespa
There are actually much cooler Vespas than the Fred Perry X, but this one is a great collector’s item. Designed by the famous clothing company in collaboration with Piaggio, the limited edition Fred Perry X Vespa was created to celebrate Fred Perry’s 100th anniversary. Only 100 models were made.

6.  The Skybike

The Skybike, invented by Marios Diamantis, is a custom-made bicycle that you ride upside-down. This unusual position of riding creates the illusion that you are riding on the sky.  Probably not a very practical ride (the inventor himself can only ride it for 20 minutes at a time), but pretty cool nonetheless.

7. The Madsen Bucket

Bikes have come a long way, and the Madsen BUCKET is the latest in two-wheeled evolution.  The Bucket cycle is adjustable for a variety of body types - from 5′ to 6′6″ builds - and it comes equipped with a removable seat, two seatbelts and a 40-gallon “bucket” on the back — perfect for carrying precious cargo, like groceries - or the kids.

8. The Bridgestone Angelino Assista

The Bridgestone Angelino Assista bicycle is specially designed for parents. It has no crossbar; instead it has a child seat (there’s also space for one on the back) and an electric motor to help with the pedaling. Aside from being awesome that way, it’s also quite beautiful, with lines reminiscent of both Italian motor scooters and classic bicycles.

9. The Scissor Motion Scooter

Miss your childhood scooter and your previously skinny legs? Then this is the ride for you. This sexy (and sexifying) scooter moves when your legs move laterally in a scissor-like motion. Propelled by the principles of adduction and abduction, the scooter’s two foot decks end in spring-loaded, in-line skate wheels that pivot independently up to 60º, allowing for brisk multi-degree turns — even a full 360º — with speed. It can be ridden on smooth, firm surfaces like a pair of in-line skates, allowing you to slalom back and forth with ease. It can also turn as a conventional scooter using just the front wheel and handlebars.

10. Convert-O-Bike

Okay, you can’t ride this, but it’s a great bike to get your kids. Crafted from cast aluminum, the virtually indestructible Convert-O Bike was designed in 1949 by the Anthony Brothers. What’s great about this bike is that it can grow with your child. Just remove the rear axle and insert one of the wheels into the rear fork to transform the tricycle into a big-kid two-wheeler. Plus, the seat can be adjusted back and forth, accommodating children of different sizes.
