10 Awesome Alternatives to the Ordinary Office Chair

October 26, 2009

If you’re desk-bound for most of the day, the most important item in your office is the chair that’ll support your work-weary back and behind for 8 hours or more. Here are ten awesome options to replace the boring bit of furniture you’re probably sitting on right now.

1. Zero-Gravity Chair

I’m sorry, I’m drooling as I type this. I…want…this…chair!!!! Billed as the closest to zero-gravity you can get, the Stokke Gravity Chair can rest in a variety of positions depending on your mood or task — from upright as an office chair to rocked back for noon-time naps, gaming or video-viewing. Drooooool…

2. Surf Chair

The Surf Chair was designed by Kenneth Lylover for the ‘Internet Collection’ competition at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair,  and to no one’s surprise, it snagged the title of “Best Product” at the event. Come on, just look at it — what other chair could possibly compare?

3. Tank Chair

The Tank Chair is actually a custom off-road wheelchair for outdoor use… but who says you can’t commandeer it to use as your all-purpose office chair instead? I mean really, how BADASS would it be to roll from behind your desk and patrol the office in your very own TANK to check on your troops? Awesome.

4. MotoArt Ejection Chair

If you’ve ever wished for an eject button to make a quick escape from the office, the MotoArt Ejection Chair will get you as close to that dream as you’re ever going to get. Made from authentic B-52 Stratofortress and F-4 Phantom Jet Fighter seats, these office chairs are made by technicians who strip the original seat of all old material, then repair, grind, sand, and polish the frame to a high gloss aluminum finish, adding sturdy custom aluminum bases and modern seat fabrics to give them a more workplace friendly feel.

5. James T. Kirk Captain’s Chair

You might not be able to pilot the Enterprise in real life, but you can at least feel like it in the James T. Kirk Captain’s Chair. This full-scale replica of Kirk’s captain’s chair from the original Star Trek TV series is constructed from the original design conceived by Matt Jefferies, and is limited to only 1,701 units. Features include a wood and steel platform, leather seat and back with oak arm rests, 360-degree swivel action, and various toggle switches, knobs, and buttons from the series, some of which play classic Trek dialogue or sound effects through the seat’s built-in speaker.

6. Galactic Throne

If you’d rather be the baddie in your geeky office fantasy, forget Captain Kirk’s chair and get the Galactic Throne instead. This uniquely themed metal chair designed by Richard Riley and Tom Spina will make you feel like you’re commanding a starship or a ruling a galactic empire! It features an adjustable pedestal to set the height to your preference and is made to appear to “float” Darth-Vader-style on 8 hidden wheels.

7. FlexibleLove

FlexibleLove is furniture made from recycled cardboard and post-industrial wood waste, featuring a unique honeycomb construction that allows each piece to be stretched to various lengths and shapes. Squeeze it in to seat just yourself, or stretch it out to seat twenty — it’s versatile like that, and very, very cool.

8. Sit Down Surfboard Chair

Designer Adam Scott created the “Sit Down” Surfboard Chair to be placed in an office environment and provide a relaxing and calming form of escapism from cabin fever.  “Personnel may sit and imagine the lapping of the waves and the cool sea breeze instead of the low drum of the office humidifier and endless chattering of phone calls.”  One wonders how much work you can actually get done on this, but it’ll sure give people something to chat about at the water cooler.

9. Cube Chair

The Cube Chair by Heinz Julen looks like a cute little rolling cabinet when closed. When you open it, the cover slides behind the back-rest and hand-rests pop out on both sides, turning it into a comfortable chair.

10. Shopping Cart Chair

This chair, titled “Consumer’s Rest” was made in 1983 by Frank Scheiner, head of Stiletto Studios in West Berlin. It’s probably not very comfortable, but boy is it cool. And really, how unusual is it for a woman to sacrifice comfort for style anyway?

I’m about to fit out 60000 sqft of office space, complete with a ‘furniture library’ so workers can swap out their normal Mirra chair for the day for an item in the library (scatterred around the ‘unusable’ corners and crannies of the floor).. I can see me acquiring some zero gravity chairs, some surf boards and maybe a cube or two, as well as some other wacky items from elsewhere… thanks for doing the hard work for me in finding them!
