5 Men’s Sites Even Women Will Enjoy
October 7, 2009Ok, maybe I should expand that title to say “5 men’s sites women will enjoy in spite of the semi-nude photos and sexist jokes.”
I used to laugh when my male friends would say they read Playboy “because of the articles.” (Yeah, right… pervazoid) But the truth is, many men’s magazines really do have fabulous, well-written and extremely funny content.
I already mentioned HolyTaco as an example in a previous post. Here are five more men’s sites I think you might enjoy:
1. AskMen
AskMen.com draws in over 7 million readers a month, and with good reason. It’s a comprehensive portal for all things male, with well-written content covering a wide range of topics.
What I like: Their Top 10 lists, movie and gadget reviews, and the fine living section. Also, the pics of the bikini-clad babes are discreetly placed so as not to distract.
What I don’t like: The big ads you sometimes have to endure before you actually get to what you want to read
2. Asylum
Asylum.com is another awesome men’s lifestyle magazine that I make a point to visit daily. It might not look quite as snazzy as AskMen, but it’s definitely on par in terms of interesting content.
What I like: Happy Hour Hero, which offers up tidbits of really interesting info every day, and great lists of links to what’s new on the web. Asylum editors also post a lot of independent offbeat news articles that I find both fascinating and amusing.
What I don’t like: Not a whole lot, actually. Asylum is one of my favorite sites on the web. You may occasionally come upon a sexist link or joke, but the rest of the content makes up for it.
3. Manofest
If websites were people, Manofest would be that boorish buffoon from the football team that you have fun hanging out with, but would never bring home to meet Mom.
What I like: Manofest has some really funny photo galleries, shareworthy Top 10 lists and frequently updated links to good content on other sites.
What I don’t like: The language and content can be pretty crass (for example “Today’s Links That Will Make Your Butt Explode”) and it has that whole “women as sex objects” mentality. But hey, it is a men’s site after all.
4. Maxim
Maxim.com is sort of like AskMen’s hornier cousin — also a good guide to many topics of male interest, but a little more girl-crazy and sex-obsessed.
What I like: Maxim’s Humor section (Stupid Fun in particular) is a great source of really hilarious content
What I don’t like: Ads, ads, ads and girls, girls, girls — none of which I’m interested in.
5. NextRound
NextRound.net is another of my all-time favorite sites because it’s like a real-time directory of everything awesome on the web. (Bear in mind of course that “awesome” is relative.)
What I like: NextRound’s humor section, images and links are updated several times daily (well, Monday to Friday at least) to show what’s buzzing on the web at any given time. NextRound sometimes also features obscure but really funny websites that you’d never find otherwise.
What I don’t like: As with Asylum, not a whole lot. Being a men’s site, it naturally has the requisite sexist content but that’s easy to skip.
