Fun with Funds: 12 Cool Contraptions to Make Saving Suck Less

September 16, 2009

Saving money can be such a hassle — and that’s if you’re even able to save at all (another hassle).

Given the right motivation however, you might find that saving can in fact be a little less sucky. Here are 12 unique banks that might provide the push you need:

1. Fill ‘Er Up Coin Bank

The Fill ‘Er Up coin bank is designed to look like a gas gauge, which inches its way upward every time you drop your coins in. The more you save, the faster you get to a full tank!

2. Banclock: the Extortionist Alarm Clock

The Banclock is the sleepyhead’s worst nightmare - an alarm clock that won’t stop ringing until you give it some money. It’s extortion at its finest - and most irritating.

3. Vanishing Coin Bank

When you use the Vanishing Coin Bank, it might not feel like you’re saving any money, because anything you drop in magically disappears! Don’t worry though, your money will reappear when you open it up.

4. The Incredible Coin-Shrinking Money Box

The Incredible Coin Shrinking Money Box (also known as the Micro Bank) is another fantastic optical illusion. Drop a coin in the slot at the top, and the coin slides down a silver funnel which becomes impossibly narrow at the bottom. The coin then apppears in the little box - but shrunk to about a quarter of its normal size.

5. The Amazing Coin Factory Bank

The Amazing Coin Factory Bank really is.. well, amazing. Insert up to three coins at once, press the start button, and watch as each coin individually travels up a belt, drops through a series of slides, is lifted again up a spiral chamber, dropped into a moving arm and carried across the bank.

Another series of slides receives the coin, then a second moving arm picks it up, drops it in a slot, onto a track on the outside of the bank, and finally into the bank’s vault for safekeeping. When the coins are all secure, the electronic brain shuts off the bank until you start it back up with another coin.

6.  Magic Hand Grabbing Toy Bank

This battery-operated Magic Bank is both creepy and cool. Just insert a coin in the slot and watch. The box will start to tremble as a hand reaches out to grab the coin.

7.  Coinbank

Revol-design’s Coinbank is an attractive replacement to the coin jar. When coins are dropped into the top, they bounce chaotically off clear spacers on the way down. Coins can be released from the bottom when the custom lock is removed.

8. Casino Slot Machine Bank

Ok now really - how cool is this? The Casino Slot Machine Bank is a fully functional casino style slot machine, complete with live spinning reels,  a working handle, and a bell and flashing candle when you hit the jackpot.

9.  Zillionz Deluxe ATM

The Zillionz Deluxe ATM is actually a toy meant for kids, but admit it - it’s really kind of cool, and you want one for yourself.  The ATM keeps track of deposits and withdrawals, and even comes with an ATM card so you can check your balance on the screen.

10.  Household / Garage Product Stash Safes

What a great way to stash your cash! These household product stash safes use real brand names, and look exactly like the original products. The bottom of each safe unscrews so you can hide or access your money and valuables.

11. The Fanny Bank

This crude but hilarious Fanny Bank will really crack you up (pun totally intended). Every time you drop in a coin, it’ll fart in digital audio.

12. *%#@! Ceramic Swear Bank

Ok so this *%#@! Ceramic Swear Bank doesn’t actually do any tricks, but I like to think it’s psychic.  It does, after all, know and show exactly what’s on your mind every time you’re forced to put some money away.
